Mauritius North Coast Road Trip: Grand Baie, Pereybere & Cap Malheureux

A day (or two) in the island’s liveliest corner: gardens, coves, boat trips and a red-roofed chapel by the sea.

In short

The north of Mauritius is compact, so a loop through Pamplemousses, Cap Malheureux, Grand Baie and Pereybere can be done in a day by car, or enjoyed over two. It is the island’s busiest resort area, with restaurants, shopping and boat trips, but also quiet coves and the island’s most photographed chapel. Traffic around Grand Baie builds in the evening, so start early.

If Mauritius has a social heart, it is the north. Grand Baie draws visitors with its restaurants, shops and sailing, while the coast around it hides small beaches and calm bays. The distances are short, which makes the north ideal for a relaxed self-drive.

This route follows a logical loop and suggests where to stop. It works as a single day trip from a base in the north, or as part of the 7-day itinerary.

Getting to the north

From the airport, the quickest route to the north normally uses the motorway network towards Port Louis and then the northern motorway. Allow extra time for traffic around the capital in the morning and late afternoon. If you are staying in the north, you can have your car delivered at Grand Baie.

Stop 1: Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere and is known for its giant water lilies and tall palms. Go in the morning, when it is cooler, and allow at least an hour or two for a relaxed walk. Bring water and a hat.

Stop 2: Cap Malheureux and Coin de Mire

Cap Malheureux is the northern tip of the island. It is best known for the red-roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice chapel by the sea, with Coin de Mire islet visible offshore. It is a popular photo stop, so go early or late for a quieter visit. Respect the chapel as a place of worship if services are taking place.

Stop 3: Pereybere

Pereybere is a small, lively beach just along the coast from Grand Baie, popular with visitors and locals. The water is usually calm, and there are cafés and shops nearby. It gets crowded around midday and at weekends, so aim for the morning for a quieter swim.

Stop 4: Grand Baie

Grand Baie is the island’s main resort town: restaurants for every budget, shops, markets and the departure point for catamaran and boat trips to nearby islets. It is also where traffic and parking are most challenging. Park in a car park rather than circling the centre, and avoid the evening peak if you can.

Water activities and boat trips

Boat trips, snorkelling and diving are popular in the north. Book through established operators and follow safety briefings. Conditions and prices change with the season, so check details directly with the operator on the day.

Where to eat

Grand Baie has the widest choice, from casual street food to full restaurants. For a quieter meal, look at small restaurants in villages inland and along the coast. Ask locals for recommendations: they are often the best guide.

Driving tips for the north

  • Keep left, and expect many roundabouts in and around Grand Baie.
  • Traffic is heaviest in the evening and at weekends around Grand Baie.
  • Look out for pedestrians, scooters and buses stopping suddenly.
  • Use a car park in town; do not leave valuables visible.
  • Read our driving guide if you are new to left-hand driving.

Extending the trip

If you want a longer stay in the north, use Grand Baie as a base and add a beach day or a boat trip. You can also combine the north with the best beaches in the east. A compact car is easy to park, and a seven-seater helps for groups. See the fleet.

A calmer alternative: the quiet corners of the north

If Grand Baie feels too busy, spend time in the smaller villages along the coast and inland, where local snack stalls, fishing boats and small beaches give a more everyday picture of island life. Drive slowly, stop where it looks interesting and be respectful in residential areas. The north is also a good base for an evening walk along the shore after the day-trippers leave.

Rain, wind and the best light

The north is generally sunny, but showers pass quickly. Morning light is best for the botanical garden and the chapel at Cap Malheureux, while late afternoon suits a swim at Pereybere. If the wind picks up, sheltered bays on the north-west coast are usually calmer than the exposed east. Check the forecast the night before and keep a flexible hour or two in your plan.

Where to base yourself

Staying in or near Grand Baie gives you restaurants and nightlife within walking distance and short drives to the other stops. Villages around Pereybere and Cap Malheureux are quieter. If you want to split your holiday, spend a few nights in the north and the rest in the west or east, and use our location pages to see where we can deliver your car.
